Life Is Calling is a contemplative pastel work inspired by the quiet beauty of light filtering through woodland leaves, a moment the Japanese call komorebi, where sunlight gently breaks through the canopy. This piece reflects the shifting nature of life itself,  moments of clarity, hope and warmth appearing through challenge and uncertainty. The Japanese have a word ‘komorebi’ which translates roughly to ‘light filtering the leaves of trees. It highlights a Japanese appreciation for nature and the subtle beauty found in everyday moments. It encourages a focus on finding moments of light and beauty even when passing through difficult times. 

As a subject it reminds me that life’s brightness is not constant but dynamic, shifting with time, perspective, and circumstance. It teaches us to appreciate the gentle, transient flashes of clarity and joy that break through the canopy of our everyday struggles.

Molly Malone is a fictional Dublin character although she was probably based on a composite of various Dublin characters. and is the subject of Dublin’s unofficial anthem ‘Cockles & Mussels’. She was a fishmonger who died of a fever at a young age. Her statue is located on Suffolk Street and was designed by Jeanne Rynhart. It was first unveiled on June 13, 1988 as part of Dublin’s Millennium celebrations. June 13 was declared Molly Malone Day.

This is a one off original Monoprint. 

Part of the Horizons series which expands on my Inspired By Ireland series of paintings. A focus on highlighting the colours of native fauna within the landscape.

”In this series I focus on the native flowers and fauna which are found in a specific area. These colours become the basis for my palette and the predominant greens are pushed back in an effort to amplify what is unique to that specific location.”

This painting is inspired by  Irish woodlands. I Am drawn to woodlands and forests and always find myself captivated but the light as it finds its way through the foliage and labyrinth of branches and trunks. There is something magical about it and as the seasons change so does the nature of light. This winter scene is drawn from a regular walk through Malahide Castle grounds.
