Molly Malone is a fictional Dublin character although she was probably based on a composite of various Dublin characters. and is the subject of Dublin’s unofficial anthem ‘Cockles & Mussels’. She was a fishmonger who died of a fever at a young age. Her statue is located on Suffolk Street and was designed by Jeanne Rynhart. It was first unveiled on June 13, 1988 as part of Dublin’s Millennium celebrations. June 13 was declared Molly Malone Day.

To its east stands Trinity College. To its south stands a series of 19th century buildings that were mostly banks. It has been used as an assembly point for political rallies, speeches and concerts including speeches by American Presidents Bill Clinton and Barrack Obama.
