IN SEARCH OF A SIMPLICITY
Last year I completed Project365. This year I'm attempting a new and very different type of project.
Very simply, I am trying to reduce the number of personal possessions I own to 100. This includes, clothes, technology, accessories, musical instruments and pretty much everything that I call my own.
There are items that I don't call my own as I'm not a hermit and have to exist in this world with a partner and kids. So, the car, for example, falls into the communal category. The house, our bed, cutlery etc also fall into this category.
There are a number of reasons for undertaking this project.
1. Simplicity
2. Considered consumption
3. A more meaningful existence
I will write more about these as the years progresses. For now, as we hit the end of January, I still own in the region of 1,000 persoanl possessions. Given that I have gotten rid rid of over 1,000 items in the last year - mostly books and CD, there is a long way to go.
Why 100 things? No reason other than I believe that's plenty and I need a target. I may or may not reach it. I may even surpass it but that's not the point really. I don't regard myself as a minimalist. I'm simply trying to be be more discerning and to create value to the things I own. Essentially, if what I own doesn't enhance my life, I don't want to own it. Naturally, the idea of enhancement is subjective but I know what that means to me and hopefully I'll be able to verbalize my thoughts to you over the course of 2018.
Onward and upward or should that be downward?
