Original Pastel painting on fine grain paper.
The Japanese have a word ‘komorebi’ which translates roughly to ‘light filtering the leaves of trees. It highlights a Japanese appreciation for nature and the subtle beauty found in everyday moments. It encourages a focus on finding moments of light and beauty even when passing through difficult times.
As a subject it reminds me that life’s brightness is not constant but dynamic, shifting with time, perspective, and circumstance. It teaches us to appreciate the gentle, transient flashes of clarity and joy that break through the canopy of our everyday struggles.

The Irish landscape is quilted in a rich tapestry of beautiful flowers. The colours are as rich and as varied as the people who inhabit the island.
No-one has to tell a flower to bloom. It just does. Likewise, we don't permission form anyone to burst into full blossom. Worth remembering that!

As adults we have learnt that we will make mistakes and lots of them. Hopefully not the same over and over but new ones as we encounter new situations. We instinctively want our kids to be safe and untouched by the harshness of life but that's not very realistic, is it?
Our job is to 'push' them, like a bird pushed her young from the nest. That's how we learn to fly. It doesn't mean that we won't be bruised and scratched along the way but it does mean that we have a shot at contentment.
Doing things wrong and making mistakes is part of the process. Our mistakes clear the way for the possibility of success. Let them make mistakes if we truly want them to be happy.
As Einstein said, 'Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.'

The bridge leading into Trim, Co. Meath is regarded as the oldest bridge still in use in Ireland. What attracted me to it, besides its beautiful architecture, was the sense of people returning. The bridge gives a strong sense of being welcomed home. In the crossing we find ourselves back at our source.

Can you imagine not learning from the good and bad experiences? Can you imagine not growing as a person? Some of us may be pretty close to perfect but I can't think of anything worse than recognising something in myself that I wasn't happy with and not trying to improve. Yep, staying the same - scary!

We lost Christy Dignam in June of 2023 after a long battle and what a loss he was.
This piece is my tribute to Christy, a unique talent with a sublime voice. Everything about his voice is a testament to pain and overcoming adversity. Some of us succumb to damage and some of us use it to climb to a higher place. Thanks for climbing Christy.

College Green is a three sided plaza in the centre of Dublin. On its northern side is the Bank of Ireland, which until 1800 was Ireland’s Parliament House. To its east stands Trinity College. To its south stands a series of 19th century buildings that were mostly banks. It has been used as an assembly point for political rallies, speeches and concerts including speeches by American Presidents Bill Clinton and Barrack Obama.

Is there a greater gift to give to a child than self-belief? No. If a child can grow up believing in themselves, it opens up a world of possibility for them. Chances are they will also believe in those around them. Let’s make the magic last as long as possible and encourage the young, playful minds that will shape the world in years to come.
