Dream a big dream and then dream another. Childhood is for dreaming up the world in a way we can only see it and change it. We need to encourage our children to dream and to share those dreams with us so we can tell them 'yes, yes, yes'
It can be hard to let kids make their own mistakes. As adults and parents we want what's best for them but at the same time we want to direct them along the right path. There lies the dilemma. What is the right path? We may have a sense of what we think it should be but that doesn't mean it's right for them. If we can encourage our young people to pursue a life that makes them happy and good people, then we have to trust they will use our support as a starting point to draw their own map.
The great Oscar Wilde said, 'Be yourself : everyone else is already taken'. In essence that's what this print is all about. Being yourself simply means accepting who we are and what we like, without fear of ridicule. On paper that sounds easy but it can be quite a challenge to have the self confidence to follow your heart and your instincts. There's always pressure to conform to others idea of how and what you should be but as Oscar said .... The reality is, you're perfect the way you are!
As adults we have learnt that we will make mistakes and lots of them. Hopefully not the same over and over but new ones as we encounter new situations. We instinctively want our kids to be safe and untouched by the harshness of life but that's not very realistic, is it?
Our job is to 'push' them, like a bird pushed her young from the nest. That's how we learn to fly. It doesn't mean that we won't be bruised and scratched along the way but it does mean that we have a shot at contentment.
Doing things wrong and making mistakes is part of the process. Our mistakes clear the way for the possibility of success. Let them make mistakes if we truly want them to be happy.
As Einstein said, 'Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.'
Is there a greater gift to give to a child than self-belief? No. If a child can grow up believing in themselves, it opens up a world of possibility for them. Chances are they will also believe in those around them. Let’s make the magic last as long as possible and encourage the young, playful minds that will shape the world in years to come.
