In drawing this I wanted to capture a sense of self acceptance in the image. The subject is totally at ease with herself. There is a feeling of playfulness, freedom and abandon in her movement.

If you familiar with Leonard Cohen's song 'Tonight Will Be Fine' you will see how it influenced the piece as it was playing while I drew.

The focus of this range is to capture the essence of the subject with the minimal use of line. The one line pieces are, as the name suggests, drawn with a single
line, the pen or brush never leaving the paper., creating deceptively simple images.

I’ve always been drawn to earthy colours - ochre, orange, brown …. I’ve always loved autumn and the colours it brings. I find them incredibly peaceful.

 

I chose an autumnal palette for this piece in which I wanted to convey a sense of rest
and peace. It isn’t an actual place but rather a scene from drawn from the memory of many places I have been and experienced that deep sense of peace.

In this series of paintings, Instead of controlling every detail, I allow colours to wander, merge, and settle into organic patterns that can’t be planned. In a sense it is a collaboration with the medium and allows for surprising forms and textures emerge which are often more alive and expressive than anything intentional. Embracing these unpredicted movements becomes a reminder that creativity thrives when we let go, stay curious and trust the process to reveal something new.

Bar 1661 opened its doors in 2019 and within a few short years (including being closed during the Covid pandemic) it was winner of Ireland's Bar of the Year 2022. Based in the heart of Dublin 7, it is named after the year Poitín as we know it was banned.

The ethos of owner Dave Mulligan is deeply rooted in the promotion of Irish Poitín through cocktail culture. Well worth a visit.

It can be hard to let kids make their own mistakes. As adults and parents we want what's best for them but at the same time we want to direct them along the right path. There lies the dilemma. What is the right path? We may have a sense of what we think it should be but that doesn't mean it's right for them. If we can encourage our young people to pursue a life that makes them happy and good people, then we have to trust they will use our support as a starting point to draw their own map.

The Japanese have a word ‘komorebi’ which translates roughly to ‘light filtering the leaves of trees. It highlights a Japanese appreciation for nature and the subtle beauty found in everyday moments. It encourages a focus on finding moments of light and beauty even when passing through difficult times. 

As a subject it reminds me that life’s brightness is not constant but dynamic, shifting with time, perspective, and circumstance. It teaches us to appreciate the gentle, transient flashes of clarity and joy that break through the canopy of our everyday struggles.
